America celebrates Fourth of July with parties, parades and lots of hot dogs

The holiday to commemorate the country’s independence from British rule saw Donald Trump head to the golf course, while other politicians went abroad

Ahead of Tuesday evening’s Fourth of July fireworks displays, Americans celebrated the country’s 241st birthday on the ski slopes, abroad and, in the case of the president, at their golf courses.

The holiday, which commemorates the country’s declaration of independence from British rule, is known for traditions including neighborhood block parties, local parades and Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.

The Beach House ($1.99 Kindle) and Swimming Lessons: A Beach House Novel ($3.99 Kindle), by Mary Alice Monroe [Harlequin MIRA]; the fourth in the series, Beach House for Rent, was released just last month.

The Beach House

Known for her moving characters and emotional honesty, Mary Alice Monroe brings readers a beautifully rendered story that explores the fragile yet enduring bond between mothers and daughters

Caretta Rutledge thought she’d left her Southern roots and troubled family far behind. But an unusual request from her mother—coming just as her own life is spinning out of control—has Cara heading back to the scenic Lowcountry of her childhood summers. Before long, the rhythms of the island open her heart in wonderful ways as she repairs the family beach house, becomes a bona fide “turtle lady” and renews old acquaintances long thought lost. But it is in reconnecting with her mother that she will learn life’s most precious lessons—true love involves sacrifice, family is forever and the mistakes of the past can be forgiven.

Swimming Lessons

Rediscover this uplifting tale of the healing power of nature and the strength of friendship by New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe.

It’s been five years since the original turtle lady, old Miss Lovie Rutledge, passed away, but her legacy lives on with some special women, especially Toy and her daughter, young Little Lovie.

Toy Sooner kept her graveside vow to her beloved mentor. She left behind an abusive, dysfunctional lifestyle to become a strong single mother and aquarist at the South Carolina Aquarium. But success has taken its toll, leaving Toy fearful of change and risks.

Caretta Rutledge, Florence Prescott and Emmaline Baker have all experienced loss. This summer, with each other’s friendship and support, they will try to make their dreams a reality.

The turtle season begins the day Toy rescues a sick sea turtle on the beach. When Toy brings the loggerhead to the aquarium, she begins a turtle hospital with the help of her boss, Ethan. As the summer progresses and the sea turtles take their measured steps toward healing and freedom Toy, Cara, Flo and Emmi must find their own strength to face their fears and move courageously toward their futures.

Open Road One Day Deals & Promos

WereWoman ($1.99 Kindle), by Piers Anthony – I can say this is one of his books that I haven’t run into before; it leans a bit towards the Erotic Romance side of the scale, which isn’t entirely unusual for this author whose satiric (non-romance) fantasies I grew up reading.

In this delectable fantasy romp, a shape-shifting private detective with sexual identity issues hunts a serial killer preying on the Supernatural community

Who but the indomitable Piers Anthony could write a hard-boiled detective-novel-fantasy-comic thriller featuring demons, succubi, zombies, ghosts, serial murder, gender bending, and a healthy dose of good, clean sex? Anthony’s remarkable imagination has taken glorious flight once again with WereWoman—and no one does it quite like Piers Anthony!

The classy dame who walks into fledgling private eye Philemon’s office is like Venus in motion and is most definitely a Witch. But dealing with Supernaturals—or “Supes” for short—is Phil’s beat, since he himself is a shape-changing Were. And this sexy sorceress is offering him the “friendship of her thighs” to investigate a murder, so how can he possibly refuse? But the Warlock slaying in question turns out to be only the first in a series of homicides, because someone—or something—is picking off Supes like insects. Soon the search begins leading the brand-new dick into places outside the mundane realm—into a Demon amusement park, through the doors of an Incubus-Succuba dating service, and into some very sticky situations where he’ll need to undergo a supernatural sex change just to stay alive.

Latin-influenced Florida, with its Chimichurri Game Hens and Mojo-Marinated Pork on Sugar Cane. Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life ($12.99 Kindle; $4.95 Audible), by William Finnegan [Penguin] – Winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Autobiography; Included in President Obama’s 2016 Summer Reading List; Publishers Weekly Starred Review

A deeply rendered self-portrait of a lifelong surfer by the acclaimed New Yorker writer

Barbarian Days is William Finnegan’s memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates, it is something else entirely: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life. Raised in California and Hawaii, Finnegan started surfing as a child. He has chased waves all over the world, wandering for years through the South Pacific, Australia, Asia, Africa. A bookish boy, and then an excessively adventurous young man, he went on to become a distinguished writer and war reporter. Barbarian Days takes us deep into unfamiliar worlds, some of them right under our noses—off the coasts of New York and San Francisco. It immerses the reader in the edgy camaraderie of close male friendships annealed in challenging waves.

Finnegan shares stories of life in a whitesonly gang in a tough school in Honolulu even while his closest friend was a Hawaiian surfer. He shows us a world turned upside down for kids and adults alike by the social upheavals of the 1960s. He details the intricacies of famous waves and his own apprenticeships to them. Youthful folly—he drops LSD while riding huge Honolua Bay, on Maui—is served up with rueful humor. He and a buddy, their knapsacks crammed with reef charts, bushwhack through Polynesia. They discover, while camping on an uninhabited island in Fiji, one of the world’s greatest waves. As Finnegan’s travels take him ever farther afield, he becomes an improbable anthropologist: unpicking the picturesque simplicity of a Samoan fishing village, dissecting the sexual politics of Tongan interactions with Americans and Japanese, navigating the Indonesian black market while nearly succumbing to malaria. Throughout, he surfs, carrying readers with him on rides of harrowing, unprecedented lucidity.

Barbarian Days is an old-school adventure story, an intellectual autobiography, a social history, a literary road movie, and an extraordinary exploration of the gradual mastering of an exacting, little understood art. Today, Finnegan’s surfing life is undiminished. Frantically juggling work and family, he chases his enchantment through Long Island ice storms and obscure corners of Madagascar.

The recipient of numerous literary prizes, including the National Book Award, the Kafka Award, and five Hugo and five Nebula Awards, this renowned writer has, in each story and novel, created a provocative, ever-evolving universe filled with diverse worlds and rich characters reminiscent of our earthly selves. Now, in The Birthday of the World, this gifted artist returns to these worlds in eight brilliant short works, including a never-before-published novella, each of which probes the essence of humanity.

Here are stories that explore complex social interactions and troublesome issues of gender and sex; that define and defy notions of personal relationships and of society itself; that examine loyalty, survival, and introversion; that bring to light the vicissitudes of slavery and the meaning of transformation, religion, and history.

The first six tales in this spectacular volume are set in the author’s signature world of the Ekumen, “my pseudo-coherent universe with holes in the elbows,” as Le Guin describes it — a world made familiar in her award-winning novel The Left Hand of Darkness. The seventh, title story was hailed by Publishers Weekly as “remarkable . . . a standout.” The final offering in the collection, Paradises Lost, is a mesmerizing novella of space exploration and the pursuit of happiness.

In her foreword, Ursula K. Le Guin writes, “to create difference-to establish strangeness-then to let the fiery arc of human emotion leap and close the gap: this acrobatics of the imagination fascinates and satisfies me as no other.” In The Birthday of the World, this gifted literary acrobat exhibits a dazzling array of skills that will fascinate and satisfy us all.
