Skylight in the skull lets the ultrasound in

The implant is made of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia, a ceramic material

Ultrasound is already utilized to treat brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, plus it can be used to kill cancer cells and to dissolve stroke-causing blood clots. Unfortunately, however, the thickness and density of the skull absorbs or reflects much of the ultrasound before it reaches the brain, making treatments less effective than they would be otherwise. That said, a solution may be on the way, in the form of what’s being called a “window to the brain.”

New York To Hand Over Some Voter Information To Trump Voter Fraud Commission

ALBANY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — New York state will hand over some voter information to President Donald Trump’s commission investigating voter fraud, becoming the first state to largely comply with the request after initially balking.

The state’s Board of Elections voted Wednesday to provide data like voter names, birthdates, addresses and voting history after determining it had no lawful reason to deny the request.

Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in June the state would not comply. The commission then filed an open records request for voter data already available to members of the public who file such requests.

The state will not provide voters’ Social Security numbers because of state voter privacy laws.

Thirteen states and Washington, D.C., still say they won’t comply with the information request. Three others are reconsidering their denials.

Paul McCartney Plays Drums on Upcoming Foo Fighters LP

Foo Fighters recruited Paul McCartney to play drums on one track from their upcoming ninth LP, Concrete and Gold. In a new interview with ET Canada, in which Dave Grohl called the Beatle “the most wonderful guy in the world,” the band detailed how quickly the collaboration came together.

“He hadn’t even heard of the song,” said an unspecified member of the sextet. “He comes in and Dave picked up an acoustic and showed him real quick. He sat on his special drum set that his tech set up for him. I sat there with a drumstick conducting. He did two takes.”

McCartney previously collaborated with Grohl and two other surviving members of Nirvana (bassist Krist Novoselic and current Foo Fighters guitarist Pat Smear) on “Cut Me Some Slack,” an original song recorded for Grohl’s 2013 film, Sound City.

Grohl clarified that McCartney isn’t the surprise “pop star” guest Foo Fighters have been teasing for over a month. In June, the singer told BBC Radio 1, “[He or she] sings backup on one of the heaviest songs on the record. And we’re not telling anybody who it is.” But in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Grohl walked back his phrasing, explaining, “This person is, I think, is more than [a pop star].”

“It was sort of towards the end of the album and this person came up and said, ‘Man, I’d really love to sing on your record,'” the frontman continued. “I looked at [producer] Greg [Kurstin] and said, ‘OK, come in tomorrow and we’ll figure something out.’ So we found a backup part for this person to sing and we decided we were gonna make it our own dirty little secret and see if anyone can figure it out.”

Grohl denied that either Adele or Taylor Swift sing on the album. He hinted that he’d approached this person about appearing on the next season of Grohl’s all-star HBO docu-series Sonic Highways.

“I’d be amazed if anyone can really figure it out,” he said. “But it was great and this person’s been around a long time. And I think I’ve met this person maybe a few times, but I’d never spent time with this person, and we had a blast together. Really fucking fun. And [he or she is] very talented – more so than I ever knew. But, of course, I fucking ran my mouth off; now I have to answer to it every time I pick up the telephone and I’m like, ‘Fuck! I shouldn’t have said anything.'”

Grohl previously revealed several other guest stars who appear on Concrete and Gold, including the Bird and the Bee’s Inara George, saxophonist Dave Koz, the Kills’ Alison Mosshart and Boyz II Men’s Shawn Stockman.

On the Charts: Lana Del Rey Edges Tyler, the Creator, Meek Mill for Number One

Technical issues that delayed the arrival of the Billboard 200 couldn’t keep Lana Del Rey from opening at Number One as the singer’s Lust for Life claimed the top spot with 107,000 total copies.

Lust for Life marked the second Number One LP for Del Rey, who previously topped the Billboard 200 with 2014’s Ultraviolence. The singer’s last album, Honeymoon, peaked at Number Two in 2015, although it sold more copies (116,000) in its debut week than Del Rey’s latest, Billboard reports.

While the Billboard 200’s Top 10 is usually revealed on Sunday, an unnamed “top-tier data provider” that “encountered technical issues” delayed this week’s chart. While Del Rey was the favorite to finish first, the singer was expected to face a stiff competition via new releases by Tyler, the Creator and Meek Mill.

When the final totals were tabulated, the results showed just how close the race for Number One was: Tyler, the Creator‘s Flower Boy finished the week at 106,000 total copies, a mere 1,000 off Del Rey’s total. While the Odd Future rapper barely missed out on his first Number One, finishing Number Two also marked a career Billboard 200 high for the rapper.

One spot and 4,000 copies behind Tyler, the Creator was Meek Mill‘s Wins & Losses was one spot and 4,000 copies behind Tyler, the Creator, opening at Number Three and 102,000 total copies. Two more debuts landed in the Top 10: The Descendants 2 soundtrack at Number Six and Romeo Santos’ Golden at Number 10.

Outside the race for Number One, the biggest news on this week’s Billboard 200 was the resurgence of Linkin Park‘s new LP One More Light and 2000’s Hybrid Theory following the death of Chester Bennington. One More Light moved to Number Four and Hybrid Theory jumped to Number Eight in the first full sales week since Bennington’s July 20th death.

All the debuts pushed Kendrick Lamar’s Damn. out of the Top Three for the first time since its release 15 weeks ago, with the rapper finishing the week at Number Five. After two straight weeks at Number One, Jay-Z’s 4:44 dropped to Number Seven, while DJ Khaled’s Grateful closed out the Top 10 at Number Nine.

iPhone 8 Facial Recognition Will Likely Work With Apple Pay According to HomePod Firmware

Recent iPhone 8 rumors have suggested Apple may be planning to replace Touch ID with a new facial recognition system, but there’s been a lot of question about how Apple Pay will work and whether Apple will indeed be able to eliminate Touch ID entirely.

We’ve already seen confirmation that Apple is working on facial recognition in the iPhone 8 through a recent HomePod firmware release, and now additional information found in the code confirms Apple has a mechanism for authenticating Touch ID payments with a face scan instead of through a fingerprint.

A string found in the HomePod firmware by iOS developer @r_idn features two references to “pearl.field-detect” and “pearl.pre-arm” among other payment verification data. As we learned from earlier leaks, “pearl” refers to Pearl ID, the codename for Apple’s facial recognition system. Apple’s current implementation appears to be incomplete, as pearl is only mentioned under presentation and not authentication.

While many are skeptical that Touch ID can be replaced by a facial recognition system that’s equally secure, rumors have suggested Apple’s facial recognition technique captures more data points than a fingerprint scan, making it more secure than Touch ID.

It’s not yet clear how Apple Pay will work without a Home button and without a fingerprint, but it will presumably be able to authenticate by scanning a user’s face, with a payment completed via a finger on the screen as is the case in current iPhones.

Previous HomePod firmware leaks related to the iPhone 8 have suggested Apple has not implemented an under-display Touch ID solution as was initially rumored for the device, and it’s looking more and more like there’s no other physical Touch ID solution built into the upcoming smartphone.

For more on the iPhone 8, make sure to check out our extensive roundup, which aggregates all of the rumors we’ve heard about the device so far. Lately, we’ve unearthed a lot of new information thanks to the HomePod firmware, including details confirming infrared facial tracking, the design of the iPhone 8, a split status bar and tap to wake, and an upcoming “SmartCamera” feature.
