Turkish Cyprus set for coalition after rightwing party fails to get majority

Voters in parliamentary election showed their dissatisfaction with UBP party, seen as corrupt and too subservient to Turkey

Efforts are set to begin on forming a coalition government in Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus after the rightwing National Unity party won parliamentary elections but failed to secure a majority in parliament.

In a setback for forces seeking to reunite the island’s feuding ethnic communities, the UBP won 35.6% and 21 seats in the 50-member house – a reflection of its control over the levers of power after 27 years in office. The pro-solution and centre-left Republican Turkish party (CTP) came in with 20.9% and 12 seats.

CES 2018: The Best of CES Unveiled With Elgato, iDevices, LG, OWC and More

The annual Consumer Electronics Show is kicking off this week, with hundreds of companies on hand to show off their latest products. The show will officially start on Tuesday, January 9, but there’s always a media preview event ahead of time, CES Unveiled.

MacRumors videographer Dan checked out CES Unveiled last night and gave us a quick overview of some of the things we can expect to see at the show this year.

Subscribe to the MacRumors YouTube channel for more videos.

Unsurprisingly, smart devices are a main focal point this year, with many manufacturers introducing new products that support HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Assistant. Alexa and Google Assistant integration have been especially popular, but we’ve also seen HomeKit built into interesting products like faucets and shower heads.

Elgato was showing off its updated Eve Room and new Eve Button, with the former designed to measure air quality and temperature in a room and the latter designed to allow you to activate HomeKit scenes san smartphone.

iDevices latest smart light switch, the Instinct, was one of the more interesting products at CES Unveiled. The Instinct has built-in Amazon Alexa support rather than simply Alexa integration, so you can ask your light switch for the latest news, weather updates, and more, similar to other Alexa devices. In addition to Alexa support, there’s also support for HomeKit for simple controls, but it’s only Alexa that offers full personal assistant functionality in the light switch.

Moodo, originally an Indiegogo project, was at CES Unveiled to show off its Moodo smart scent diffuser, which is designed to allow you to customize and curate specific scents with built-in aroma modules and app-based mixing controls. Priced at $189, the Moodo box comes with four scents that you can mix up at will using your iPhone.

LG was showing offits new 34-inch 5K ultrawide monitor, which looked amazing, and at this year’s show, LG is also demoing a new 65-inch super thin 4K OLED display prototype, which is flexible and can be rolled up.

There were tons of drones and action cameras on the CES Unveiled floor, including a 360 degree action cam from Rylo. Rylo’s camera is unique because it allows you to capture 360 degree video and then edit it into a video with traditional dimensions. You can use footage captured from any angle, which makes for some pretty interesting videos.

Belkin was at CES Unveiled demonstrating its new line of wireless charging docks that are all designed to work with the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus, and OWC was on hand showing off its newest products, like the ultrafast Thunderblade V4 SSD.

Make sure to stay tuned to MacRumors this week for all of our ongoing CES coverage, because there’s a lot more to come. We’ll be highlighting all of the new products and accessories relevant to Apple users. To check out what we’ve shared so far, take a look at our CES 2018 hub.

The Weeknd Cuts Ties With H&M Over ‘Deeply Offensive’ Photo

The Weeknd has severed ties with clothing retailer H&M after a controversial photo of a black child modeling a hoodie reading “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” appeared on the Swedish company’s website. The singer tweeted on Monday, “Woke up this morning shocked and embarrassed by this photo. I’m deeply offended and will not be working with H&M anymore.” A source close to the singer confirmed to Rolling Stone that the artist is no longer working with H&M.

The singer – real name Abel Tesfaye – began his association with H&M in 2017, modeling in ad campaigns and collaborating on pieces for his XO brand.

Backlash over the photo spread on social media, with various media figures calling out the ad as racially insensitive. “I’m sure the apologies are a coming,” Questlove wrote on Instagram. “And the ads will be pulled. I’m certain there will Be media fixers and whatnot and maybe a grand gesture like a donation to some charity (donations under these circumstances are the corporate version #SomeOfMyBestFriendsAre move if there ever was one) all this tells me about @HM is that the seats in the boardroom lack something…wanna take a guess?”

H&M quickly addressed the controversy in a statement. “We sincerely apologize for offending people with this image,” the company told USA Today of the ad, which promoted a hooded top for sale in the U.K. “The image has been removed from all online channels and the product will not be for sale in the United States. We believe in diversity and inclusion in all that we do and will be reviewing all our internal policies accordingly to avoid any future issues.”

The company reiterated their apology in a statement issued to Pitchfork, writing, “We understand that many people are upset about the image. We, who work at H&M, can only agree. We are deeply sorry that the picture was taken, and we also regret the actual print. Therefore, we have not only removed the image from our channels, but also the garment from our product offering globally. It is obvious that our routines have not been followed properly. This is without any doubt. We will thoroughly investigate why this happened to prevent this type of mistake from happening again.”

Marijuana Use STILL Illegal at Coachella this Year

California voters overwhelmingly supported Proposition 64 – also known as the Adult Use of Marijuana Act – back in November 2016. Although it took over a year to put an infrastructure into place to transition from a state that had previously only allowed medical usage, long lines at the various dispensaries in the new year suggests that changing the legal status is a resounding success.

While there have already been rumblings from Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, that he plans to let federal law have the final say, additional “anti-marijuana” policies are surprisingly staying in-tact at a music festival that supposedly champions the counter culture; Coachella.

Placing marijuana on the banned list alongside other novelty items like hula hoops, air horns, and selfie sticks, official language on the festival’s website states, “Marijuana or marijuana products aren’t allowed inside the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Even in 2018 and beyond.”

While festival organizers are certainly entitled to their own policies, the decision seems rather ironic given the acceptance of other legal substances like cigarettes and alcohol.

Stephen Curry Wants Ownership Stake In Carolina Panthers

OAKLAND, Calif. (CBSNewYork/AP) — As a longtime fan of the Carolina Panthers, Stephen Curry is absolutely interested in having an ownership stake in the team.

He reminds everyone his day job is as a star of the Golden State Warriors , so he wouldn’t be the kind of hands-on owner flying cross-country each week to attend major meetings. But the two-time MVP has people helping him explore options to buy into the franchise, which Jerry Richardson announced he would sell while he is under investigation for sexual and racial misconduct in the workplace.

“It’s a pretty interesting opportunity,” Curry said after Monday’s shootaround. “I’ve had conversations with plenty of people about the right way to go about it and kind of the different approaches I could personally take. Obviously I have a day job but I’ve got people that are plugged in and trying to see how to make that happen.”

Rap mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has expressed interest in buying the team. Curry recently told TMZ he has spoken to Combs about possibly teaming up with him to make a bid.
