California Could Dismiss ALL Marijuana Convictions Dating Back To 1975

Here’s some groundbreaking and optimistic news: California could dismiss all marijuana convictions from the past 40 years.

Californians with convictions for marijuana-related misdemeanors will see their records cleared, as prosecutors up and down the Golden State begin dismissing convictions going all the way back to 1975. Others with felony convictions could see their offenses reduced to misdemeanors.

The News From San Francisco

In San Francisco last week, District Attorney George Gascon announced that his office will be automatically applying provisions of Prop 64 to remove convictions going back to 1975 for activities that are now legal under state law. Gascon noted that policies of the past were unevenly enforced, and disproportionally affected minorities.

“We want to address the wrongs that were caused by the failures of the war on drugs for many years in this country and begin to fix some of the harm that was done not only to the entire nation but specifically to communities of color,” said Gascon.

Prop 64, passed by California voters in 2016, legalized the recreational adult-use of cannabis and provides for a regulated commercial market for marijuana products. It also allows those with convictions for offenses that are no longer illegal to clear their records.

But under the law, those provisions aren’t automatic and can be costly. Those wishing to have their convictions removed are required to petition the court, usually requiring the services of an attorney to create and file their paperwork. District Attorney Gascon said that his action will remove that burden and allow the law to benefit all people equally.

“While this relief is already available pursuant to Proposition 64 for anyone with a conviction, it requires that they know it is available and to retain an attorney to file the expungement paperwork. A criminal conviction can be a barrier to employment, housing, and other benefits, so instead of waiting for the community to take action, we’re taking action for the community,” he said.

Final Hit: California Could Dismiss ALL Marijuana Convictions Dating Back To 1975

The San Francisco District Attorney’s office has identified 3,038 misdemeanor convictions that will be expunged, and 4,094 felonies that will be reviewed and re-sentenced.

Authorities in San Diego County are also working to help those with marijuana convictions clean up their records. Summer Stephan, interim District Attorney, said her office is working with county public defenders to identify those who stand to benefit. That partnership has already seen relief for 55 people who were either behind bars or on formal probation.

“We wanted to be pro-active. It’s clear to us that the law was written to allow this relief, and it’s important that we give full effect to the will of the people, especially for those who are most immediately affected,” said Stephan.

But San Diego’s efforts won’t be as comprehensive as the program undertaken in San Francisco. The computer records San Diego officials are using only go back about 15 years. That means it’s still up to people with convictions older than that to take matters into their own hands.

Other California counties haven’t been as quick to retroactively apply the provisions of Prop 64. A bill introduced in the state assembly by Oakland Democrat Rob Bonta in January would require eligible convictions statewide be automatically expunged or reduced by the courts.

Attn: Kim Kardashian — Lindsay Lohan Apparently Does Not Have A ‘European Accent’ Anymore!

It’s Lindsay Lohan‘s world… we’re just living in it! (LOL just kidding, it’s totally Kim Kardashian‘s world.)

In an article published on Monday, the Mean Girls star spoke to W Magazine about her life in Dubai, her return to acting, and her various upcoming projects, including her new cosmetics line.

Related: Lindsay Thinks Her Nasty Snake Bite Is ‘Good Luck’

And contrary to what Kim said in our Instagram comments, author Lauren McCarthy said she spoke “without a trace of the vaguely European accent she’s rumored to have adopted.”

There you have it!

When it comes to living in the United Arab Emirates, the 31-year-old enjoys not being a paparazzi target. She told the publication:

“There’s a certain calmness that I find there. There’s no paparazzi, no cameras; that’s a big deal for me… I never considered people taking a picture ‘bothering’ me, but I don’t want people to misinterpret who I am as a person if they see me sneezing and they say I’m crying. I do really appreciate having the life where I can just go outside and not have to worry.”‘

The actress even relies on a support network of female friends.

“It’s a very big place for female activists… Women have a very strong community. It’s a whole different world, which is really cool. It’s a place you think women don’t have as much of a right to be themselves, but they actually have more than you’d imagine.”

Although the thespian has made her fair share of headlines throughout the years, Lohan believes celebrity culture has gotten crazier due to technology and social media.

“It’s [called] an iPhone… We didn’t have Instagram… It would have been a lot calmer for me. When you think about it, paparazzi are not as crazy as they used to be when I used to be in New York. Now I can just [take a picture] before I walk out the door and then there is no story. It’s good, but it’s a little in-genuine. But don’t you think it’s going to go away? It used to be, the less you are seen, the better. But that’s impossible. What, are you never going to leave home?”

Last month, the thespian shared an image of herself next to an animated Batgirl (SEE HERE), in what many thought was an attempt to get Joss Whedon to cast her in the upcoming adaptation.

Apparently, Lindsay wants the role so badly, she thought about stalking the necessary people in Los Angeles to make it happen!

“I even considered flying to Los Angeles the other day just to stalk them for Batgirl… It’s true. I thought, How do I get to Los Angeles without anyone knowing that I’m there?”

Love her or hate her, you have to admit she is damn persistent!

Keep reading for more HIGHlights from her interview:

On her upcoming makeup line and more new projects: “I love lipstick, but I love using lipstick as blush. But if I have a cream blush, I want to be able to use it on my lips and not worry about breaking out after. So, I developed one… I did my leggings line, but I think I was filming [too much], and I didn’t have the focus. It’s closer to haute couture.”

On wanting to go to the Oscars: “But I don’t want to go just to go. I want to go because I have accomplished something great, and I just want to be there for the film. I don’t want any personal thoughts, or, I don’t want to come there with a statement of some kind. I just want to come there and say, ‘I’ve been aspiring to come here on the stage like all the Hollywood greats that I’ve looked up to my whole life—the Elizabeth Taylors, the Marlene Dietrichs, the Anne Baxters—and I’m here. Thank you.’ I just want to say thank you.”

Images of Samsung’s Galaxy S9 Leak Ahead of Rumored February Unveiling

Samsung is planning to unveil its next-generation smartphones, the Galaxy S9 and S9+, at an event that’s set to take place at Mobile World Congress on February 25, but ahead of that date, several images have leaked depicting the South Korean company’s new flagship device.

Noted leaker Evan Blass, aka @evleaks, has shared several renders of the new Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ on Twitter, along with details about what to expect from the device that will compete directly with Apple’s own iPhone X.

Galaxy S9

Samsung’s two new smartphones will continue to use the same general design as the Galaxy S8 devices, with slim bezels and a near edge-to-edge Super AMOLED display. Unlike the iPhone X, the S9 and S9+ have black bars at the top and bottom of the device, with the top bar housing components like the camera and the microphone.

Galaxy S9+

The larger of the two devices, the Galaxy S9+, features a new vertical dual camera design at the back of the phone, similar to the iPhone X. Samsung’s invite for its February 25 event suggested camera improvements will be a main focal point for the two new flagship devices.

Rumors suggest the Galaxy S9 will feature a single 12-megapixel camera with variable aperture from f/1.5 to f/2.4, while the S9+ will feature the same variable aperture 12-megapixel camera paired with a second 12-megapixel camera with a fixed aperture.

Samsung isn’t ready to introduce a robust Face ID-style feature in its smartphones (but it will continue to offer less secure iris scanning and facial recognition as options), so the Galaxy S9 and S9+ will feature fingerprint sensors located at the back of the devices. Samsung has, however, repositioned the fingerprint sensor on both devices to below the camera instead of to the right of it.

Samsung plans to offer its Galaxy S9 and S9+ in Midnight Black, Lilac Purple, Titanium Gray, and Coral Blue. The Samsung Galaxy S9 will measure in at 5.8 inches like the iPhone X, while the S9+ will measure in at 6.2 inches. Android Central has additional details about Samsung’s upcoming S9 and S9+ for those who are curious about what to expect to see in the devices that will directly compete with the iPhone X.

Deal of the Day: The Madewell Mini Pocket Transport Tote

A hundred bucks isn’t anything to sneeze at, but for an all-leather bag, it’s a steal. Materials and labor to make a leather bag have certain price floors, which means that, after markup, there aren’t many options of any sort below $100, and below $200, the pickings are slim. That’s what makes the Madewell Transport Tote, a perennial Brooklyn favorite, stand out, and it’s also what made me take notice of the line’s new addition, the Madewell Mini Pocket Transport Tote.

At $128, this simple, casual little bag is a versatile option. It comes in five neutral colors, and at 7.75″ wide and 8″ tall, it can easily fit any cell phone, in addition it a slim sunglasses case, small wallet, your keys and one or two other essentials. For most people, that’s all you need to run errands or go out with some friends, and the bag’s crossbody strap will keep you hands-free while the small top handles offer a second carry option.

The inside of the bag is open, with one generously sized zip pocket on the rear wall to hold smaller items or valuables. The only top closure is the Drawstring, but because of the bag’s small size, it’s unlikely you’d have much inside to escape that couldn’t be held back by that or the zipper pocket. The interior is line in tonal leather, which is a great touch for bag at this price point.

You can pick up the Madewell Mini Pocket Transport Tote for $128 via Nordstrom.

How to Protect Yourself From MRSA at the Gym

Cleaning the Gym
Cleaning the Gym

Next time you’re at the gym, spray down that bench before you lie down, and consider bringing your own mat and towel. Scientists say that’s one of the safest ways to cut your risk of contracting an MRSA infection. Short for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, this staph bacteria is often spread by skin-to-skin or skin-to-surface contact and is resistant to many antibiotics.

According to the CDC, one in three people carry staph and two in 100 carry MRSA. And the gym is a hot spot for the germs, says Kelly A. Reynolds, Ph.D., a microbiologist at the University of Arizona. “Towels collect MRSA because the bacteria survive very well on dry surfaces,” she says. Yoga mats and exercise balls are also often contaminated. To curb your risk, wash your hands and cover any open wounds.
