Two Free Audiobooks – Courage Has No Color & In the Heat of the Night

It’s time for this week’s free audiobooks from Sync. I’ve linked in the info from the ebook or audiobook version of each title (Amazon has the best reviews), followed by the link to get your copies free, with directions to ensure you get the complete download. You’ll need the Overdrive Console loaded (directions are on Sync’s website) and I suggest you use the desktop app to ensure you download a copy for backup purposes.

Start off with Courage Has No Color, The True Story of the Triple Nickles ($9.17 Kindle; $16.09 Audible), by Tanya Lee Stone [Candlewick], narrated by J.D. Jackson [Brilliance Audio]. Starred Reviews: Booklist, School Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly

Book Description
World War II was raging, with thousands of American soldiers fighting overseas against the injustices brought on by Hitler. Back on the home front, the injustice of discrimination against African Americans was playing out as much on Main Street as in the military. Enlisted black men were segregated from white soldiers and regularly relegated to service duties.

At Fort Benning, Georgia, First Sergeant Walter Morris’s men served as guards at The Parachute School while the white soldiers prepared to be paratroopers. Morris knew that in order for his men to be treated like soldiers, they would have to train and act like them, but would the military elite and politicians recognize the potential of these men, as well as their passion for serving their country? Tanya Lee Stone examines the role of African Americans in the military through the lens of the untold story of the Triple Nickles as they became America’s first black paratroopers and fought a little-known World War II attack on the American West by the Japanese. The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, in the words of Morris, “proved that the color of a man had nothing to do with his ability.”

John Ball’s In the Heat of the Night ($4.95 Audible), by Matt Pelfrey, narrated by Ryan Vincent Anderson, Michael Hammond, Kalen Harriman, Travis Johns, James Morrison, Darren Richardson and Tom Virtue [L.A. Theatre Works], is the second selection for this week.

Book Description
Based on John Ball’s novel which inspired the Oscar-winning film and the Emmy-winning television series, In the Heat of the Night pits a visiting black detective from California against a small Alabama town simmering with anger over desegregation. A fitting reflection of America in the 1960s, this Off-Broadway hit is provocative, timely, and uncomfortably relevant.

An L.A. Theatre Works full-cast recording, featuring Ryan Vincent Anderson, Michael Hammond, Kalen Harriman, Travis Johns, James Morrison, Darren Richardson, and Tom Virtue. Directed by Brian Kite. Recorded before a live audience by L.A. Theatre Works.

Click HERE to get the free downloads. For each book, click on the audiobook cover, enter your name and an email address, then click on the Get your FREE download now button; on some systems, you’ll be prompted to save an ODM file (others will run it automatically) and, if so, save it to your desktop, then click it after it downloads, to start Overdrive. Don’t stop until you see the Overdrive software open up (there is a link at Sync, if you don’t already have Overdrive installed).

Once in Overdrive, you’ll need to tell it where to save the files (just click OK to use the default location, since Overdrive will keep track of them for you), then again to actually start the download. By default, all parts of the book are downloaded; I would suggest not changing this in the last dialog box, just click on OK to get the download started. Make sure your audiobook is fully downloaded before the end of the week, as once the promo period is over, you won’t be able to get these for free (you can double click any title in Overdrive and will get a message that either it entirely downloaded or you’ll get a list of the “parts” and can download the ones that you don’t have).

You can’t get any titles that have been missed, but once they are loaded into Overdrive (which you will need to install, if you are not already using it for library books), they are yours to keep (there is no expiration date).

Black Atlanta Church Vandalized With Confederate Flags [Video]

Confederate battle flags were stealthily placed on the grounds of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s church, and authorities said Thursday they were looking for two white males who were recorded on surveillance camera leaving the banners behind. Atlanta police Chief George Turner said his agency was working with federal authorities and they have not determined what charges might be levied. Turner said they have not ruled out a hate crime. An officer from the Atlanta FBI’s joint terrorism task force was on the scene “to better determine if any specific threats were received” and to provide support to Atlanta police, the FBI informed in an email.
