Watch ?uestlove’s ‘Quest For Cuba’ Mini-Documentary

With his turntables and Serato in tow, ?uestlove traveled down to Cuba in April as an ambassador for hip-hop. Not wanting to miss out on the moment, Okayplayer TV sent a camera crew down with the talented musician to capture the experience. Along with playing club nights, ?uest took in the culture, mixed it up with the people, went crate digging and dropped by Cuba’s famous EGREM studios. This was ?uest’s first trip back to Cuba since 2002 when The Roots played a packed out show for the locals. During the 13-minute flick, ?uest has a chance encounter with Cuban hip-hop artist Brebaje Man, who opened for The Roots during that show over a decade ago. Check out the full documentary above.

in light of the highly-publicized cases of police brutality and deaths at the hands of police officers, ?uest has publicly called on artists to write protest songs to ignite change. “Anthems critical of the times are largely absent, even as demonstrators condemn the system that failed to prosecute the officers involved,” the Philly native told Billboard. “I think a lot of it is just due to fear of being blackballed and not making a living.” He also took to Instagram to call and challenge musicians and artists to be the voice of the people during these hard times:

I urge and challenge musicians and artists alike to push themselves to be a voice of the times that we live in. I know that many see what happened to Dixie Chicks' #NatalieMaines @mainesmusic (she bravely expressed her opinion/dismay on the Bush administration declaring war & was unjustly targeted….while in hindsight being CORRECT) suddenly there was an onslaught of radio silence from artists across the board (correction not everyone was silent, but the silence was deafening) although I'm kinda/sorta addressing the hip hop nation I really apply this challenge to ALL artists. We need new Dylans. New Public Enemys. New Simones. New De La Roachas. New ideas! But it just doesn't stop there!! We need outlets (hello #ClearChannel #RadioOne #Vh1) to balance the system. Yeah I'm just as guilty of feeling the high of all that I despise ("Devil's Pie" D'angelo) but the reason why this nation seems to be moving 3 steps ahead in some areas…..but then 7 steps backwards in every area is a lack of balance. I'm not saying every song gotta be "Fight The Power" but in times like these we need to be more community minded (taking a wild guess that "urban radio's" format didn't change much from the pre program stuff (using that word *politely*) we've been hearing for years. & when I say challenge I don't mean breathless race to the finish on who makes the more banging "Fuck Tha Police" sequel. I mean real stories. Real narratives. Songs with spirit in them. Songs with solutions. Songs with questions. Protest songs don't have to be boring or non danceable or ready made for the next Olympics. They just have to speak truth. I laugh & have fun w "Bitch You Guessed It" like everyone else. But my soul is aching man. Seriously just ONE or Two songs that change the course. This is something I feel the need and urgency to put out there. #EricGarner #MikeBrown #JusticeForAll #FeedMySoul #HandsUpDontShoot #ICantBreathe

Here is a lower-priced option.

Katharina Grosse ‘The Smoking Kid’ Exhibition at König Galerie

Berlin-based artist Katharina Grosse presents her latest exhibition in Germany’s König Galerie, being showcased from May 2 to June 21. The work of art currently fills the new gallery that is located in the St. Agnes Church, as reconstructed by Arno Brandlhuber. Grosse’s The Smoking Kid exhibition highlights a rectangular format of panel painting via a two-dimensional technique. Bright colors and sharp edges pop from the canvas backdrop, as Katharina uses various entities such as plants, clothing, furniture and architecture to come together throughout the vivid imagery, which rivals that of her accustomed work.

Liam Gallagher Defends One Direction After Noel Jab

Of all the spats Noel and Liam Gallagher have had over the years — including one that involved a cricket bat — their latest centers around an unlikely source: One Direction. Liam has jumped to the boy band’s defense, whom Noel criticized in a recent Rolling Stone interview, tweeting, “Hey NG leave those 1d kids alone.”

It’s unclear which of Noel’s 1D-related comments Liam was referring to. During the interview, Noel offered his unfiltered opinion of Zayn Malik’s decision to leave the beloved British band (“You can be fucking anything that moves and gettin’ paid half a million dollars a week, you fuckin’ idiot. You want to be a normal 22-year-old?”). But he also brought up the group while discussing his 15-year-old daughter’s budding musical tastes.

Though Gallagher said he was pleased his daughter was inquiring about Manchester Britpop band the Stone Roses, he added, “I wouldn’t have expected her to be into anything other than One Direction when she was 12. If she’s into One Direction when she’s 22, she’s getting shunned.”

But Liam did not harp on Noel’s One Direction hate for too long, turning his focus squarely on his brother. Again, Liam refuted Noel’s claims that he — or someone close to him — anonymously planted a rumor about an Oasis reunion, tweeting, “You know I don’t bum the press never had never will you know where I am if you need me.”

Liam also fired a few more shots at Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ new album, Chasing Yesterday. Expanding on a previous dig at the album’s use of the saxophone, Liam tweeted, “Just coz you have a SAXAPHONE [sic] on your new record and you think your [sic] all Pink Floyd.” He then offered up the ridiculous insult: “Everybody knows your [sic] just another PRICK in the wall.”

Sam Smith to Undergo Vocal Cord Surgery Following Hemorrhage

Sam Smith will undergo vocal cord surgery following a recent hemorrhage on tour in Australia last month.

“I am very upset to announce I have been battling to get my vocal cords better the last 10 days,” the singer wrote in a Facebook post. “But unfortunately they haven’t recovered and I am going to need surgery. I’m so gutted to be missing all the shows and events I was meant to be playing at.”

The vocal cord hemorrhage occurred during a show in Sydney, Australia on April 28th. In an Instagram post, Smith revealed that had been feeling “vocally exhausted for a while.” He cancelled the remainder of his Australian tour dates.

Smith has cancelled all May and June tour dates due to the surgery and necessary vocal rest, including appearances at Hangout Music Festival and Rock in Rio USA. He noted that recovery could take up to eight weeks and plans on resuming his tour on July 5th at France’s Mainsquare Festival. Smith is still scheduled to appear at this summer’s Lollapalooza in Chicago.

The singer has been touring extensively around his 2014 debut album In the Lonely Hour. The album helped the newcomer win big at this year’s Grammy Awards, earning him Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year statues. The latter two were for his single “Stay With Me.”

Smith is only the latest pop vocalist to deal with vocal cord hemorrhages. In 2011, Adele underwent laser microsurgery to repair her vocal cords following the continuous rupturing of blood vessels. Bjork and Keith Urban also underwent similar surgeries during the same time period.

Love It or Leave It: The Moschino Denim Overall Backpack

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: Moschino has made yet another weird accessory that looks like something other than what it is. (It is a bag.)

This time, the weirdness is brought to us by way of the Moschino Denim Overall Backpack, which is such a bluntly descriptive name that it almost feels brilliant, in sort of a droll way. It is, for better or worse, exactly what it sounds like.

Overalls, as apparel, seem stubbornly destined to stick around for the summer as a trend, and Moschino creative director Jeremy Scott never met a trend that he couldn’t poke fun at via an expensive luxury accessory. For $995, you can either let everyone know that you’re really in on the joke or not in on it at all, depending on your perspective. Scott’s Moschino is a brand that thrives at both extremes.

Would you ever strap this thing to your back? If yes, pick yours up through Shopbop for $995. Hurry, though–there are only two left.

Should You Buy a Wedding Gift for Your Assistant if You’re Not Invited?

wedding gift for coworkerIf one of your coworkers is getting married and you’re not invited to the wedding, should you give her a gift? What if it’s someone really important — for example, should you get a wedding gift for your assistant anyway? Reader L wonders…

My secretary is getting married very soon, and I’m wondering whether I should get her a wedding gift and, if so, what I should get her. She’s in her 40s and this is her second marriage (she has adult children). She’s just having a small wedding at home, so I didn’t get an invite or anything, I was just thinking it would be nice to get her something but I have no idea what. It’s not like she’s in her 20s and just starting out, so I’m kind of at a loss. Hoping you and/or your readers can help.

Interesting. I see a lot of questions from commenters about what to gift, when to gift, and so forth, so here are my $.02… (Note that my advice is the same if your admin is a man, as well; but because Reader L has a female secretary, let’s use the feminine…)

If you’re not invited to your colleague’s wedding, technically you don’t have to get anything. That said, you want to keep your assistant happy. So for my $.02, I would suggest getting her a “token” gift — you’re acknowledging this important day in her life. A small gift card, something small off her registry — it’s a gesture to show you are happy for her and wish her well; nothing more. I would guess, though, that a gift of extra leeway around the wedding would be more appreciated than a token gift — it isn’t a months-long pass to plan her wedding at the office, but just a bit of extra understanding on your part that she has Other Stuff Going On in the days before the wedding, as well as the day or two after she returns.

Ladies, what gift (if any) would you give your secretary if you weren’t invited to the wedding? What in general are your thoughts on weddings and colleagues?

Psst: we’ve also talked about what to wear to a colleague’s weddinginviting coworkers to your wedding, what to wear to officiate a wedding, and wedding and baby showers at the office.
