Austin City Limits: Foo Fighters, Drake, the Strokes Set to Headline

Foo Fighters will return to Austin’s Zilker Park to headline this year’s Austin City Limits festival alongside the Strokes, Florence + the Machine, Drake, the Weeknd, Disclosure and Deadmau5. The festival will feature more than 140 acts and will take place over two weekends: October 2nd – 4th and 9th – 11th.

The lineup, as always, will feature an eclectic roster spanning a wide array of genres, including Bassnectar, Alt-J, Hozier, Alabama Shakes, Of Monsters and Men and Modest Mouse, Tame Impala, Sturgill Simpson, The Decemberists, Ben Howard, Gary Clark Jr., Chance the Rapper, Brand New, TV on the Radio, Walk the Moon, A$AP Rocky, Billy Idol, Twenty One Pilots, Nero and Dwight Yoakam.

Like Coachella, nearly every act will play both weekends, with the exception of the Strokes and Alabama Shakes, who will only play the first weekend, and Florence + the Machine and Modest Mouse, who will appear the following week.

Three-day passes for the festival go on-sale at 11 a.m. EST at the festival’s website. Those unable to attend can check out select acts on the ACL Festival Livestream on Red Bull TV. Organizers will reveal more details, including a list of participating bands, in September.

Foo Fighters should be well-prepared for large crowds by the time ACL hits. The group will perform at European stadiums throughout June, including two nights at Wembley Stadium, before beginning their U.S. tour July 4th at Washington, D.C.’s RFK Stadium. To celebrate both the musical travelogue Sonic Highways and 20th anniversary of the group’s 1995 debut album, the D.C. show will feature guest appearances by Chicago’s Buddy Guy, Austin’s Gary Clark Jr., Seattle’s Heart, Los Angeles’ Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, New York City’s LL Cool J with DJ Z-Trip, D.C.’s Trouble Funk and New Orleans’ Trombone Shorty.

Last year, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and Co. visited Austin as part of the Sonic Highways series. Speaking to Rolling Stone, Grohl used Austin as an example of the increasing gentrification of U.S. cities.

“I think the message in the Austin episode is that we have to be careful that we don’t overlook the reasons why people are drawn to these cities,” he said. “There’s something about Austin and its alternative culture that’s an oasis in the middle of this country that attracted people to it in the first place. The personality and the fingerprint of this city is unlike anywhere else. The preservation of that needs to be a priority because if you’re not careful, that could be wiped away and you’re just left with a strip mall.”

Sienna Miller Wears Roger Vivier: A Place in the Sunshine

Sienna Miller Wears Roger Vivier

Sienna Miller was walking on sunshine on May 3rd in New York City. Of course, her sun-streaked blonde bob, naturally warm disposition, and Manhattan’s gorgeous weather had something to do with it, but most specifically, it’s Sienna’s big, bright Roger Vivier tote.

Listen to Vince Staples’ New Track “Señorita” feat. Future

Those lucky enough to catch Vince Staples on tour of late would have witnessed the Long Beach rapper cooking up a frenzy for his new number alongside Future. Titled “Señorita,” Staples anchors the track with his unrelenting pace, paired with Future’s signature rapid-fire cadence. Backed by an ominous production, the studio quality version is surely of note for fans of Vince, while we can only hope to see the duo get on stage together sooner rather than later.

Listen to the track below and watch Vince Staples deliver a ferocious performance of “Señorita” at SXSW.

‘A Queen For A Day’ Starring Vincent Pastore Opens At St. Clement’s Theater

This classic mafia crime story with a twist is playing at the Theatre at St. Clements on 423 W. 46th St, New York.

Set in an abandoned warehouse in New Jersey, Michael Ricigliano Jr.’s new play, Queen for a Day, is a story about organized crime, family, loyalty, and love.  The play follows mafia member Giovanni “Nino” Cinquimani (David Proval) as he agrees to meet with prosecutor Patricia Cole (Portia) for a “queen for the day” or proffer agreement under the guidance of his lawyer, Sanford Weiss (David Deblinger).  By signing this agreement, Nino can confess anything and everything with immunity from the law.  However, Patricia Cole needs him to rat out his own brother, made man and mob boss Pasquale Cinquimani (Vincent Pastore).

Personal connection is found in this story, as it grapples with several universal themes, allowing the play to distinguish itself from other, clichéd mafia/Italian-American stories.  Nino finds internal conflict with his will to survive and his loyalties to his brother, to his family/co-workers, and to his integrity.  He also struggles with what “family” really means and how his childhood memories and experiences shaped the course of his life.  The inclusive, “family” idea of the mafia is also challenged in this play by exposing the bigoted nature of this organization.

The production itself is very simplistic and lets the story speak for itself.  The set consists of several walls representative of the warehouse, with a white door on a black downstage right wall.  A large, grimy paned window is set on the upstage left wall and is softly lit from behind.  The set’s color palate consists of varying shades of fading grays, blacks, and whites.  The lighting is also as simplistic, sparse, and very realistic.  The natural lighting shifts slightly as the play progresses, with false sunlight setting through an unseen window, communicating the passage of time as Patricia interrogates Nino.

The small ensemble cast of Queen for a Day was strong and solid. Portia’s Patricia Cole was powerful, in command, and a formidable force on stage.  She had an extremely clear voice and it demanded your attention.  David Deblinger’s Sanford Weiss was very entertaining and fleshed out.  Watching David Proval and Vincent Pastore work together was extremely exciting as an audience member.  They both played off of each other well and embodied gangsters expertly.

Overall, Queen for a Day was a solid production.  Ricigliano Jr.’s writing was very tight and well done, and while it felt drawn-out and predictable at times, his plot twists were surprising while still being realistic to the world and plot he created.  It’s definitely a production worth seeing, regardless of whether or not you’re a Sopranos fan.
