University of Michigan Makes Fitness Leaps

At the University of Michigan (U-M), a healthy lifestyle starts from the top and trickles down to the entire student body. U-M recently launched its health and fitness major, which helps students prepare for a fitness education career. In addition, U-M receives the third-most medical school funding among public colleges from the National Institutes of Health, and its hospital is ranked as one of the best in the nation. The Wolverines’ dedication to health care is backed up by their athletic prowess, especially in men’s gymnastics. Each gymnast trains based on his or her event; for the pommel horse and still rings athletes, upper body strength is priority.

“They’ll do the bench press followed by a circuit of upper and lower body exercises and conclude with torso and grip work,” says Jamie Preiss, a strength and conditioning Olympic sports graduate assistant.

“A sample circuit is goblet squat, dumbbell curl to press, pullups, inverted row, dumbbell flyes, and dumbbell Romanian deadlift.”

Preiss credits each Wolverine’s will to win for the team’s success.

“The strength and conditioning program is designed to improve strength, but without the individual’s commitment, success is hard to come by.”

Shoulder Greater Loads With the Snatch Press

Generally speaking, the heavier you lift, the bigger you get. But strict shoulder pressing limits your poundage. By combining a snatch and press, you use your hips to get more weight overhead, so you can then lower it slowly to your shoulder, overloading the deltoids.

How to Do It

  1. Stand with feet slightly wider than shoulder width.
  2. Bend your hips until the dumbbell is below your knees (as shown above).
  3. Keep your chest forward. Explosively extend your hips and pull the weight up in front of your body, locking it out overhead.
  4. From there, turn your palm so it faces in, then slowly lower the dumbbell to your shoulder. That’s one rep.

If I fitz, I sitz — even on the wing of a plane!!!

A cat in French Guiana decided it wanted to stow away — or maybe more accurately, fell asleep hidden in the wing of a light plane — and wasn’t discovered until after the craft took off!

Even crazier, the feline’s flight was captured on video!

Pilot Romain Jantot took a little while to notice the furry stowaway, but once he did, the plane turned around and landed quickly so the cat could disembark.

The good news is that the cat was able to hang in there baby and survive the incident. And the silver lining? It now gets along much better with birds. LOLz!

Let’s just hope that kitty put its tray table up and its seat back in its upright and locked position for landing!

Today’s Featured New Release is How to Catch a Russian Spy: The True Story of an American Civilian Turned Double Agent ($13.99 Kindle), by Naveed Jamali and Ellis Henican [Scribner / Simon and Schuster].

Book Description
The fascinating story of a young American amateur who helped the FBI bust a Russian spy in New York—sold in ten countries and in a major deal to 20th Century Fox.

For three nerve-wracking years, Naveed Jamali spied on America for the Russians, trading thumb drives of sensitive technical data for envelopes of cash, selling out his own beloved country across noisy restaurant tables and in quiet parking lots. Or so the Russians believed. In fact, this young American civilian was a covert double agent working with the FBI. The Cold War wasn’t really over. It had just gone high-tech.

How to Catch a Russian Spy is the one-of-a-kind story of how one young man’s post-college adventure became a real-life US counter-intelligence coup. He had no previous counter-espionage experience. Everything he knew about undercover work, he’d learned from Miami Vice and Magnum P.I. reruns and movies like Ronin, Spy Game, and anything with Bond or Bourne in the title. And yet, hoping to gain experience to become a Navy intelligence officer, he convinced the FBI and the Russians they could trust him. With charm, cunning, and a big load of naiveté, he matched wits with a veteran Russian military-intelligence officer who was recruiting spies on American soil, out-maneuvering the Russian spy and his secret-hungry superiors. Along the way, Jamali and his FBI handlers cast a rare light on espionage activities at the Russian Mission to the United Nations in New York and earned a solid US win in the escalating hostilities between Moscow and Washington.

Now, Jamali reveals the whole engaging story behind his double-agent adventure—from coded signals on Craigslist to the Russian spy’s propensity for Hooters’ Buffalo wings. Cinematic, news-breaking, and wildly entertaining, How to Catch a Russian Spy is an armchair spy fantasy brought to life. Film rights sold to 20th Century Fox for director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man, 500 Days of Summer).

About the Author
After his successful run as a civilian double agent, Naveed Jamali accepted a reserve commission in the US Navy. He has spent more than a decade in technology management at a senior level. He continues to advise and speak on matters of security, counter-intelligence, and understanding the motivation to spy. A life-long New Yorker, Naveed lives in New York City with his wife and two sons. He has no intention of travelling to Russia any time soon.

Today’s Featured New Release is The Dungeoneers ($9.99 Kindle), by John David Anderson [Walden Pond Press / HarperCollins].

Book Description
The Dungeoneers is an action-packed, funny, and heartbreaking middle grade fantasy-adventure from the author of the acclaimed Sidekicked and Minion, John David Anderson.

Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day.
Teach him to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime.
Teach him to steal, though, and he won’t have to eat fish every day for the rest of his life.

The world is not a fair place, and Colm Candorly knows it. While his parents and eight sisters seem content living on a lowly cobbler’s earnings, Colm can’t help but feel that everyone has the right to a more comfortable life. It’s just a question of how far you’re willing to go to get it.

In an effort to help make ends meet, Colm uses his natural gift for pickpocketing to pilfer a pile of gold from the richer residents of town, but his actions place him at the mercy of a mysterious man named Finn Argos, a gilded-toothed, smooth-tongued rogue who gives Colm a choice: he can be punished for his thievery, or he can become a member of Thwodin’s Legions, a guild of dungeoneers who take what they want and live as they will. Colm soon finds himself part of a family of warriors, mages, and hunters, learning to work together in a quest to survive and, perhaps, to find a bit of treasure along the way.

But no family is perfect, and even as Colm hones his skills with his fellow recruits, it becomes more and more clear that something from outside threatens the Dungeoneers—and perhaps something from inside as well.

James Horner’s Assistant Confirms That The Titanic Composer Was The Pilot Who Died In That Plane Crash

We were really hoping this wasn’t going to be the case, but it looks like James Horner was the pilot who died in the plane crash early Monday morning.

As we reported earlier, a solo plane registered to Oscar-winning composer James Horner crashed near Santa Barbara at around 9:30a.m., and the pilot was found dead at the scene.

James was the only person on board, and at first, authorities couldn’t figure out who was flying the plane because of a brush fire that burnt up most of the remains upon impact.

The 61-year-old’s assistant Sylvia Patrycja confirmed that it was the Titanic composer who tragically died in the accident later on in the day.

Our hearts are with James’ friends and family at this time.

Rest in peace, James.
