Pop-punk crew returns for another Australian tour just months after visiting us for Soundwave.

Fallon Fox puts her undefeated 2-0 record on the line when she steps into the Octagon later tonight for a nationally televised bout from Miami with 2-1 Allanna Jones on AXS-TV.

To her and Jones, it’s just another ordinary bout in the 145 pound category.  The winner will advance to the final of the Championship Fighting Alliance 11 tournament and have a shot at earning a $20,000 grand prize.  But to the trans community, it’s our first opportunity to support a girl like us in MMA world since she came out in March and by default became an ambassador for trans athletes.

So nope, it’s not just an ordinary bout no matter how much both competitors wish to downplay it.   People are taking sides and have been ever since she came out.   There are folks in the trans community who want the Queen of Swords to win just as badly as the transphobic haters are rooting for Jones to do the same.

Personally, I have a major problem with the transphobic ignorance and vitriolic hatred that has been aimed at her.  But none of us are going to be in the cage slugging it out later tonight.  Fox and Jones are.

Cars burning as Stockholm braces for fifth night of riots

STOCKHOLM—At least six cars were torched in a Stockholm suburb late Thursday, as the Swedish capital braced for a fifth night of riots.

Firefighters were putting out the flames in the six vehicles in Rinkeby, one of the immigrant-dominated areas where riots have raged this week, according to an AFP photographer on the scene.

Five of the vehicles, which had been parked alongside each other, were completely gutted, while a sixth was slightly damaged, the photographer said.

Police said between 300 and 500 people were gathered around the blazing cars, the Swedish news agency TT reported.

“We are receiving reports that there are a whole lot of people there,” Towe Haegg, a spokeswoman of Stockholm police, was quoted as saying by TT.

Police were also quoted by TT as reporting disorder, with youth seen vandalizing cars, in the area around a metro station in Vaellingby, another Stockholm suburb.

Stockholm police called in reinforcements earlier in the day in preparation for possible unrest for a fifth night in a row.

Shattered image of peace

The riots have shattered Sweden’s image overseas as an oasis of peace and have set off debate about the country’s ability to assimilate immigrants, who make up about 15 percent of the Swedish population.

The troubles are believed to have been triggered when police shot and killed a 69-year-old resident in a Stockholm suburb last week after the man wielded a machete in public.

The man then fled to his apartment, where police have said they tried to mediate but ended up shooting him dead in what they claimed was self-defence.

Local activists said the shooting sparked anger among youths who claim to have suffered from police brutality. During the first night of rioting, they said police had called them “tramps, monkeys and negroes.”

Two people, including one police officer, have been reported injured in the four nights of rioting.

Early Thursday, rocks were thrown at a local police station in the Kista district, near the suburb of Husby where the riots began on Sunday night, and rocks were thrown at two local police stations south of the Swedish capital.

In the southern suburb of Skogaas, a restaurant was badly damaged after it was set ablaze.

Police meanwhile downplayed the scale of the events.

‘Failure of society’

“Every injured person is a tragedy, every torched car is a failure for society… but Stockholm is not burning. Let’s have a level-headed view of the situation,” said Ulf Johansson, deputy police chief for Stockholm county.

Residents of immigrant-populated areas are suffering from segregation, anthropologist Carlbom told AFP.

“Living as a young person in these segregated areas can be very hard in many ways. You have virtually no contact with other Swedes and a lot of times I don’t think you have a good understanding of Swedish society,” he said.

Sweden has in recent years been one of Europe’s top destinations for immigrants, both in absolute numbers and relative to its size.

In the past decade it has welcomed hundreds of thousands of immigrants from Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia and the Balkans, among others.

This is not the first time the Scandinavian country has seen riots among immigrants.
In 2010, up to 100 youths threw bricks, set fires and attacked the local police station in the immigrant-heavy suburb of Rinkeby for two nights.

And in 2008, hundreds of youths rioted against police in the southern Swedish town of Malmoe, sparked by the closure of an Islamic cultural centre in the suburb of Rosengaard that housed a mosque.

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt on Wednesday blamed the recent violence on “hooligans” and said Thursday they were not representative of the majority in those areas.

“I think it’s dangerous to draw a picture of a Sweden with a capital separated from its suburbs. I don’t think that’s true. I think the dividing line runs straight through Husby, with a majority population and then a small group of troublemakers,” Reinfeldt said in parliament.

High unemployment

Integration Minister Erik Ullenhag, meanwhile, attributed the violence to high unemployment and social exclusion in Sweden’s immigrant-dominated areas.

“We know that there is discrimination in these areas, and these events don’t improve the image of these areas, where there is a lot of positive stuff going but which is totally eclipsed right now,” he told TT.

In the suburb of Husby, overall unemployment was 8.8 percent in 2012, compared to 3.3 percent in Stockholm as a whole, according to official data.

And a total of 12 percent in Husby received social benefits last year, compared to 3.6 percent in Stockholm as a whole.

The riots have received international media attention, with some comparisons being drawn to similar problems assimilating immigrants in other European countries such as Britain and France.

“We are gradually becoming more like other countries,” said Aje Carlbom, a social anthropologist at Malmoe University.

Your challenge as a home-business owner is to strike a balance between having a good presentation in your packaging, while keeping the overhead for that packaging material at a manageable level.

Since packaging is the most visible part of your product to the general public, it’s a vital component when it comes to building your consistency and establishing a brand and reputation with your customers and potential customers.

While there is a little bit of overhead involved, with a little creativity and forethought, you can minimize the amount of money that you need to spend, without running the risk of sacrificing the quality of your packing material and presentation.

Making sales is largely a matter of aesthetics and presenting, so here are a few ways to maintain that marketing edge without breaking the budget:

1. Twine and Ribbons

Twine and ribbon are a readily available and attractive packaging option, especially for crafty or home decor items. Anything quaint can be dressed up with some twine or carefully placed ribbon, which can make a brown paper package become something immediately more attractive and well-thought out.

2. Small Cards

If you want to build on the idea of using twine, try adding a small card with your company’s information and social media accounts. It’s cost-effective and it reminds people of a gift package with a To/From card tied to it.

You’ll want to use the same colors and logo on the card that you would typically use along with the rest of your business, so just make sure that things are uniform and consistent in the regard.

3. Use your logo and keep it simple

According to Joe Cupido, CEO of packaging giant Retail Packaging, it’s important to:

“Create a clear focal point in your packaging – this could be your logo, or perhaps a trademark bow for example. This also means keeping things simple so that the customer’s eye goes exactly where you want it.”

He’s right in the sense that you want your logo and your brand to be the most recognizable and central theme of your packaging. While there can certainly be other elements included, make sure that you customer’s eyes are drawn to your logo and to things about your brand and company that they’ll remember and recognize at a later date.

4. Use small boxes

One of the simplest ways to cut costs on packaging while maintaining good presentation is to make sure boxes and containers are as small as possible. Have you ever noticed how boxed software has gotten smaller and smaller over the past decade? There’s a good reason for that. Smaller boxes are more cost-effective and are actually more attractive to the consumer.

While there are some exceptions to this rule (certain foods and bulk items), people will generally find small packaging more “cute” and manageable than bigger boxes.

Take advantage of this where you can, especially if your products are on the smaller side. Consider reusing packaging materials as well to help your business be more green.

Balancing overhead and Aesthetics

Spending money on the aesthetics of your product is a tough call. While it’s always important to sink most of your resources into what is actually inside the package, your presentation does play a huge role in getting customers on board in the first place.

Set aside whatever money you can to work on your presentation and just try to work with what you have. If you need to spend some money initially, go as economical as you can, then work your way up as needed.
