Residents Allowed To Return After Gas Leak Prompts Evacuations In Ocean County

BRICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Residents have been allowed to return home after officials say a strong odor of gas permeated a neighborhood in Ocean County, New Jersey and prompted evacuations Saturday.

Police in Brick said reports of a strong gas smell around Tennessee, Hudson, and Georgia Drives started coming in just before noon.

Approximately 50 homes were evacuated, according to police.

New Jersey National Gas told CBS2 service was turned off at 3:15, leaving 40 homes without service as crews worked to make repairs.

It was deemed safe for residents to return while the repairs are underway.

No injuries were reported.
